It was 1994 when I first played Magic. I was just a kid living in the town of Kailua, Hawaii. My older brothers and I used to play Dungeons & Dragons, so when Magic came along we were hooked. We spent a lot of evenings facing off with cards like Craw Wurm and Shivan Dragon. I ended up collecting cards from Revised, Fallen Empires, 4th edition, The Dark, Chronicles and Ice Age. Within the next couple of years we moved away from Hawaii and we eventually stopped playing magic. It was at that time I started learning how to code websites and my career path was set. Years later in 2007 I discovered some of our old collection tucked away on a shelf and ended up bringing it to college where I studied Digital Art & Design. That’s when I really got into Magic, and some time later the Commander format.
When I really started to refine my web development skills, I knew I wanted to build something for the Magic community and the idea for this tool came up. When I started working on this tool the idea of programmatically calculating EDH power levels was kind of a joke. EDHREC actually posted an April fools calculator that rated every deck a 7. So I’m very pleased that I was able to realize this idea and bring you a calculator that actually works! I have very much enjoyed working with the scryfall API and discovering all the things you can do with Magic related data. Thank you for visiting and trying it out. My hope is that this tool can help solve balance issues for players and ultimately help people have more fun playing the game I love.
While I think I'm really on to something with my data driven approach, there are a lot of different opinions about how to tackle this complex issue. Thankfully there are also a lot of people working to provide you options for getting information about the competitiveness of your deck. Here are some projects you should check out.
